Lessons Learned from Outward Bound 25

In February 2025, students from the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) participated in an unforgettable Outward Bound Experience in the Florida Everglades. For many, it was a trip full of first-time adventures — from flying on a plane to camping, paddling for miles, and disconnecting from that extra “limb”, the cell phone!

Each student faced their own challenges and walked away with powerful lessons that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Here’s what Jasmine Kinloch had to say in anticipation of the trip: “I want to learn how to use natural resources and experience life beyond the digital world,” and she was calm and ready for new experiences before the trip began. Listed below a few students share lessons learned:

Enyjah Deas was scared to paddle and be in a boat at first but gained confidence as time went on. She also struggled with canoeing long distances and sleeping on water but learned to take in the view and focus on the positives. She now wants to spend more time outdoors.

Ti’Erra Brown overcame a fear of water and sleeping on the water, saying she now feels like “a pro” at it and proud that she didn’t give up.

Cor’Dajha Russell shared that canoeing and sleeping on the water were her biggest hurdles, but she overcame them by trusting her instructors and staying focused on the beauty around her. She also realized the value of thinking outside the box, appreciating life without cell phones, and called herself “strong” for completing the trip.

Triston Diggs found it hard to sleep in uncomfortable places, including windy beaches, but he kept pushing through and was proud of how much he accomplished. He also learned navigation skills, including how to use a map and compass, and described himself as “determined,” proud of what he accomplished. He’s ready to go back next year.
